DALLAS — A North Dallas water main burst Wednesday morning, causing havoc for motorists and leaving several homes high and dry.

Dallas Water Utilities said the eight-inch line under Walnut Hill Lane near Inwood Road ruptured around 7:45 a.m. It wook workers until 9 a.m. to isolate the pipe.

Water on the road surface iced over in the freezing temperatures.

"When I started sliding, it took me by surprise," said motorist Tamala Cook. "I saw a car in front of me just spinning around — then the next thing you know, I started spinning."

Cook's car was immobilized after her sedan hit a curb, but she was unhurt. "It could've been worse than it was," she said.

Westbound traffic on Walnut Hill Lane was reduced to one lane while workers repaired the damage.

DWU said six residential customers in the 10000 block of Meadowbrook Circle can expect an outage of four to six hours before service is restored.

Gilbert Aguilar, director of the Dallas Street Services Department, said his agency received 10 reports of icy streets between 7 and 8:30 a.m. as a result of spray from lawn sprinklers.

Aguilar said road crews were patrolling known problem areas.

He warned drivers that even after the sun comes out during the day, there may still shady spots with icy patches.
