KAUFMAN COUNTY — A family member said the five-year-old child with autism who was found dead a short time after being reported missing in Kaufman County Saturday was sometimes difficult to keep up with, and that his parents watched him closely.
The boy's uncle did not wish to be interviewed on camera, but said because of his autism it would have been difficult for strangers to communicate with the boy, even if they saw him wandering in the neighborhood.
The victim's identity has not been released.
The child was reported missing around 4:30 Saturday afternoon in the 13000 block of Val Verde Loop in Ables Springs, in the northeastern part of the county.
The Ables Springs Volunteer Fire Department and Kaufman County Sheriff's Office assisted in the search. The boy was found about an hour later.
A next-door neighbor, who also declined to be interviewed on camera, said his daughter noticed the boy's body in the pond on their property. He rushed to pull him out, but it was too late.
The boy's uncle said it appears it was simply an accidental drowning. He said he and his family are "extremely hurt" by what happened.
The Dallas County Medical Examiner's office will determine the exact cause of death.
