DALLAS –– On Wednesday, officials with the Nasher Sculpture Center announced a $1 million project that will commission works from 10 artists and turn parts of the city into installations.

Nasher executives say no museum in Dallas (or anywhere else, to their knowledge) has ever taken on such a project.

Mayor Mike Rawlings said the Nasher XChange will touch every part of Dallas: North, south, east and west.  It's being called an "unprecedented" effort to spread the Nasher's beauty far beyond its normal boundaries.

"It's almost a subliminal relationship with art that happens when in a public space," said artist Vicki Meek,  who is one of the 10 commissioned to participate. "I'm a firm believer that every community deserves art."

Meek was responsible for a mosaic at DART's Hatcher Station, in southern Dallas. Her commissioned piece will be installed in South Oak Cliff, she said.

Other artists include Lara Almarcegui, Good/Bad Art Collective, Rachel Harrison, Alfredo Jaar, Liz Larner, Charles Long, Rick Lowe, Ruben Ochoa and Ugo Rondinone.

They all "represent range of sculptural practices in contemporary sculpture locally, nationally, and internationally," according to a news release. The artists each selected influences from Dallas itself, from its geography to its history.

Nancy Nasher, member of the board of trustees and daughter of namesakes Raymond and Patsy Nasher, said this is what her parents would want.

"They loved art and the joy of art and it gave them pleasure and they wanted other people to receive the pleasure that they received from art by sharing it," she said.

There will be no admission charge at any of the 10 locations.

"In communities that don't have access to cultural resources, it's not that people don't want it," Meek said, "it's that they don't know they're missing it. When it comes, you appreciate it."
