GRAND PRAIRIE - Police are searching for a man who opened fire on two people, fatally injuring one Friday morning at a Grand Prairie apartment complex.
Det. Lyle Gensler, a spokesman with the Grand Prairie Police Department, said the incident began when an armed man approached a woman and man as they sat in a parked car at about 1 a.m. in the parking lot of the Quail Ridge Apartments, located in the 1900 block of W. Tarrant Rd.
According to Gensler, the woman was dropping of her friend who was visiting a resident of the complex when the suspect pointed a gun at the pair and demanded money. The male passenger was shot after he was chased by the suspect while fleeing on foot in the parking lot.
"My understanding is [the victim] saw the threat," Gensler said. "He wanted to get away from the threat. He went to what provided him safety, towards the apartment complex, and I don't think he expected that the gunman would give chase after him and shoot him."
The injured victim, who was shot in the upper torso area, was taken to Dallas Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the car fled on foot in the opposite direction as the passenger and was able to escape unharmed. Gensler said the sound of gunfire and screams from the woman spurred the 911 call that alerted the Grand Prairie Police Department.
Crime scene investigators said bullets struck several cars in the parking lot and they found shell casings at the scene.
Police said they hoped to get a description of the suspect from the female victim, who was not injured in the shooting. However, Gensler said the position of the driver made it difficult for her to get a good look at the suspect.
