KEMP -- Kemp Police Chief Jimmy Council was rescued from an abandoned water well Tuesday morning after he fell in while responding to a loose livestock call.

Around 9 a.m., Chief Council met a Kaufman County Sheriff's deputy at the scene near FM 2860 about halfway between US Highway 175 and FM 1985.

A short time later, the chief contacted Kemp City Hall by text message to say he had fallen in the well, according to a Kaufman County Sheriff's Office press release.

Deputies located Chief Council and used a long dog leash to reach him until Kemp Volunteer Fire Department and Kaufman Fire Department personnel arrived on scene. He has fallen 15-to-20 feet before bracing himself.

The chief was removed from the well at 10:02 a.m. with minor injuries. He was transported by EMS to a local hospital to be checked out.
