Intersection closed
KELLER — Residents along Fawkes Lane in Keller are upset their neighborhood street is the detour around a new construction project.
This week, crews closed the intersection of Dove Road and Pearson Lane in Westlake and began detouring traffic through William Schlitz’ neighborhood.
"They should use major streets, there's no reason to route this," he said from the front yard of his home, as cars passed by, one by one.
"You'll see three, four, or five at a time coming down the street," said neighbor Kevin Shumake, who lives a few houses down.
Some neighbors think the change makes for a safety hazard for the many kids living in the neighborhood. Traffic is at its peak during the morning and evening commutes.
"With this specific situation, we don't have a lot of choices," said Jarrod Greenwood, the public works director with the City of Westlake.
He said the town only has a few east-west roads, and that Fawkes was the best option.
“The bigger picture is, we will have a safer road, a smoother road, that will accommodate more traffic," Greenwood said.
However, the detour is expected to last four months, and that doesn’t sit well with some residents.
"It just doesn't make sense to me," one resident told News 8.
The work is part of a $4.6 million construction project.
