DALLAS -- A homeless couple last reported living with Occupy Dallas demonstrators returned to court Monday, working towards regaining custody of their infant son.

Brian and Cathy Karpuch's baby boy will not be home for the holidays, but the judge did agree to grant temporary custody to the Karpuch's family friend.

Both parents arrived at the Henry Wade Juvenile Justice Center together.

In the courtroom, the judge gave the Karpuch’s special instructions. Over the next month, they must undergo parenting classes, random drug testing and counseling.

The Department of Child Protective Services took custody of the Karpuch's 9-month old son earlier this month, citing issues of neglect. Child Protective Services spokesperson Marissa Gonzales said the baby's living conditions were an issue as was mom's mental health.

Gonzales said the couple lost custody of two older children previously. Both have since been adopted by their grandparents.

The judge set the next status hearing for January 6, 2012 to determine what steps need  to be taken next.

In the meantime, the judge told the Karpuchs they can continue to visit their son regularly.
