DALLAS - In a symbol of unity for Texans with developmental disabilities, a one-mile walk has once again been organized in downtown Dallas.

City council member Jerry Allen and Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine R. Caraway announced the "March for Respect," which they hope will show those with developmental disabilities that Dallas cares.

"Everyone, regardless of their ability, deserves to be treated with the same dignity and respect, and that is what the March for Respect is all about," Allen said in a statement about the march. "About 54 million Americans have a disability and their contributions enrich our community as they live, work and share their lives."

"People with disabilities are, first and foremost, ordinary people with individual abilities, interests and needs," Caraway said in the statement. "I'm pleased to be a part of the March for Respect and help increase awareness in the media and with the general public about how people with disabilities are perceived."

The Eigth Annual March for Respect is at 11 a.m. March 27 in the West End area of downtown Dallas.
