MESQUITE -- Just after 7 a.m. New Year’s Day, Mary Woods said her dogs started to bark. She peaked outside her window and saw her neighbor’s house on fire.

“It started in the front bedroom and we ran out to the curb, and Curtis was out across the street and he was laying in the yard and saying his brother was still inside," Woods said.

Woods said she wanted to go into the home in the 4800 block of Stallcup Drive to help, but the fire was too intense. She captured the intensity off the fire with her camera. You can see flames engulfing the entire house.

"I'm devastated," she said. "I can't imagine what they must feel like."

The Mesquite Fire Department was there in minutes and knew there was a victim inside.

“They went into rescue mode to get him, but the fire was too much and he was already passed away," said Mesquite fire spokesman Jeff Miller.

Neighbors say the elderly victim was trying to get out, but collapsed a few feet from the door. Woods said the surviving brother told them he yelled at his brother that the home was on fire and tried to get to him, but the smoke was too thick.

Firefighters said they didn't know the cause of the fire Tuesday, and say it's a difficult way to start off the New Year. The victim has not been identified as of late Tuesday afternoon.
