DALLAS — If you know a disabled veteran in the Dallas area, you may be able to help him or her get a free home.
A non-profit group called Defenders of Freedom is looking for two veterans to live in homes that will be built near White Rock Lake in the coming months.
Veterans need to be 90 to 100 percent disabled, have a connection to Dallas, and must have a family.
Group member Richard Lane has donated his property to build the homes, and his company is helping to build them.
"I'm a patriot," Lane said. "I'm proud to be an American, and I'm grateful for these men and women who serve to keep us free."
On Wednesday, construction crews demolished the rental home he had had on the property. The old house will cleaned up this week, and new homes are expected to be finished by the fall.
The non-profit group is still seeking funding for the project. It is not only building the homes, but providing them to the veterans mortgage free.
"We can't help everybody, but we're going to do one at a time," Lane said. "As soon as we raise enough money to finish these two, we'll do a third one and keep going."
