GRAND PRAIRIE — A Grand Prairie police officer was injured early Sunday morning in a chain-reaction accident on Interstate 30.

Police said the crash happened in the westbound lanes of the freeway near Highway 161 around 4:15 a.m. as Officer Hunter Dell, 28, was helping block traffic near the scene of a major accident.

Grand Prairie police Sgt. Eric Hansen said a pickup truck driven by Jose Martinez, 26, of Arlington, crashed into the back of another pickup truck which — in turn — collided with the back of Officer Dell's vehicle.

Martinez was arrested at the scene and charged with driving while intoxicated.

Officer Dell and the driver of the second pickup truck were taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth for treatment of minor injuries.

Interstate 30 was closed for about two-and-a-half hours during the accident investigation.
