KELLER - Funeral services were held Friday in Keller for Spc. Michael Roberts, 23, who was killed while serving in Afghanistan on August 27.

He was the youngest of three sons who all served in the armed forces. His family moved to Texas when he was four-years-old and Roberts grew up in Watauga.

He graduated from Richland High School in 2006. Roberts was a varsity wrestler and played tuba in the band in high school.

Roberts joined the Army in 2007 and after training at Fort Hood, he was deployed to Iraq from 2009-2010 as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He reenlisted in 2010 and was deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, in July.

Roberts was protecting an area outside of a police station when a vehicle attempted to breach the area. The specialist engaged the enemy before the vehicle exploded, killing Roberts and injuring 20 other people. Roberts actions however, prevented further injuries or deaths.

He was recognized for his actions with being awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, NATO Medal and Combat Action Award.
