DALLAS — Firefighters battled a four-alarm fire at a senior living center in Northwest Dallas on Sunday afternoon.

The fire was reported just before 2 p.m. on the top floor of the three-story Bentley Manor Assisted Living center at 3344 Forest Lane.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and fire. Passers-by had already stopped to help evacuate many of the nearly 110 people inside.

"We thought hopefully someone is out of that room, she said, 'No, my husband's in there!'" said Good Samaritan James Chavez. "We tried to get in, low-crawl down to the bottom so you could see what was going on, and all you could see was black smoke. And then — out of nowhere — comes the manager and this guy. Awesome is all I can say... at a loss for words."

A number of residents were treated at the scene, but no one required hospitalization.

Late Sunday afternoon, irefighters were still going room-to-room making sure everyone was safe.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
