FORT WORTH — Fort Worth firefighters went door-to-door on Saturday in an effort to save lives.

They visited homes just south of downtown, checking smoke detectors and installing free units as needed.

Elvea Arriola and her six-year-old daughter Gabby Segoviano were killed in a fire nearby in the 2600 block of Market Avenue last month; the child's father was badly burned.

"I think we should make sure all our detectors are working," said homeowner Christina Ramos. "That way it saves all our lives, and all our young ones in our family, making sure we're all safe."

A Sunday fundraiser is set for the family of the mother and daughter who died in the January 24 fire.
