RUNAWAY BAY ― An afternoon blaze destroyed nine townhouses around 3 p.m. on Saturday at Shoreside Terrace Townhomes.

Firefighters from every department in the county responded, along with additional aid from Jack County. After two hours, nothing remained but ruins, ash, embers and smoke.

At least 26 residents were displaced, but there were no reported injuries. The Red Cross provided victims with vouchers for food, clothing and shelter.

Several residents believed the fire started in a townhouse fireplace. However, the cause is still under investigation.

The Wise County Messenger contributed to this report.
