IRVING — More than 80 people were displaced after fire swept through an Irving apartment building early Saturday morning.
Thirty units at the Finley Terrace apartments were destroyed in the four-alarm blaze that was first reported just before 2 a.m., Assistant Chief Rusty Wilson said.
A smartphone video clip provided by Mark London showed flames leaping from the roof of the building at 2805 Finley Road.
Neighbors heard screams, but not everyone realized there was a fire and so they didn't go outside. That's when police and some residents started knocking — and, in some cases, kicking in doors.
"One of my little cousins woke me up, said that he heard screaming from outside," tenant Raymond Macedo said.
The commotion was apparent to Lynn White. "Fire trucks, ambulances, police cars... oh yeah," she said.
One firefighter and two civilians suffered minor injuries.
Units from Dallas and Grand Prairie provided assistance to Irving firefighters.
The American Red Cross is helping the 48 adults and 36 children who lost their homes.
