Homeowners in the same Lake Whitney neighborhood where a house slid down a cliff may be covered by an earthquake insurance policy in the case of future earth movements.

Landslides, such as the one at Lake Whitney, are considered earth movements.

According to an official with the Texas Department of Insurance, 15 insurance companies in the state offer earthquake policies. However, each company determines whether or not earth movements will be covered.

A policy from one company on the list – USAA – does not cover home damage in the event of earth movement, according to the company’s underwriting guidelines.

It is unclear what the practice of the other 14 companies are. In case earth movement is excluded from an earthquake policy, a USAA customer representative said local, independent insurance agencies might offer the kind of protection some may need.
