DALLAS — Neighbors celebrated the end of an Oak Cliff eyesore on Saturday as demolition crews began tearing down the Colorado Place apartments.

A new town center with apartments and stores is planned to go in its place at the location in the 2200 block of Fort Worth Avenue at Colorado Boulevard.

A group of volunteers from the area convinced a developer to tear down the crime-infested complex.

"You can just look around and see the condition of the apartments and the blight in the community," said Scott Griggs of the Fort Worth Avenue Development Group. "It's a great opportunity to bring something new."

Construction of the new complex is scheduled to begin in March.
