Drilling permit sought

DALLAS — Citizens opposing natural gas drilling in Dallas urged the City Council Tuesday afternoon not to extend a lease for drilling at Hensley Field, the old Naval Air Station in far west Oak Cliff.

XTO Energy paid the city millions in 2008 for the right to drill. But nearby neighborhoods are now concerned about potential air and water pollution and oppose a permit to drill XTO is seeking.

The Council wants to extend the lease while a task force studies drilling safety in Dallas.

Some citizens are against the extension and permit. However, there are enough votes on the City Council to extend the lease for 30 months so the task force can do its work.
