DENTON COUNTY — A deadly crash near Texas Motor Speedway Sunday evening sent several children to the hospital and tied up traffic in southwest Denton County.
The crash on Highway 114 near Championship Parkway involved a red Dodge sedan and a white Honda that was carrying a young family.
Investigators said the Dodge, driven by an 18-year-old, failed to yield to a stop sign, accelerated through the intersection and hit the side of the Honda.
The Honda was propelled upside-down and into a ditch by the impact of the crash. The father of that family, 47-year-old David Martinez, died; his wife, Jenna, and two children were also hurt when the accident happened around 5:30 p.m.
One child, believed to be 8 or 9 years old, was airlifted to Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth in critical condition; the other, a young teen, went to the same facility by ground ambulance and was last reported in serious condition.
The mother of the children was also in serious condition.
"Especially when there are so many children involved, it's very hard for the firefighters, officers, and doctors and nurses that are going to attend to the children," said Fort Worth police spokeswoman Cpl. Tracey Knight.
Friends of Martinez said he and his wife are committed Christians who often spent time evangelizing on weekends.
No charges had been filed as of Monday afternoon. Police told us that decision will come at a later time.
The case will be referred to the Denton County District Attorney's office for review.
