ITALY, Texas  — A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper was shot and wounded at the home of another DPS trooper in this Ellis County community late Tuesday afternoon.

The off-duty trooper, identified by DPS as Clint Schumacher,  was shot in the abdomen at 5:07 p.m. at a residence in the 600 block of Rhonda Lane.

Schumacher was taken to Baylor Medical Center Waxahachie by a fellow trooper.  He was later moved to Baylor University Medical Center of Dallas for further treatment.

Schumacher was reported to be in stable condition.

The circumstances surrounding the incident were not immediately clear, but DPS said the second trooper was not involved in the shooting.

Sources told News 8 that the shooting appeared to be accidental.

The Texas Rangers were conducting the investigation.
