Free parking for all will return to outlying DART light rail stations.
The Dallas Area Rapid Transit board of directors on Tuesday voted to end its "Fair Share" parking trial that was designed to extract additional revenue from passengers who don't live in a DART member city.
DART member cities pay part of their local sales taxes to DART; other cities don't.
Parking spaces at the Parker Road, North Carrollton/Frankford and Belt Line rail stations and at the Northwest Plano Park and Ride bus station were numbered, and passengers were required to either have a sticker proving they live in a DART city or display a receipt showing that they paid to park, in the program that started in April, 2012.
Many passengers simply opted to park instead at the nearest station that didn't charge for parking, and DART staffers who reviewed the trial said it simply wasn't paying for itself.
Free parking will resume in April, 2014.
