HURST ― Joy Hummel liked Sheila Johnston to sit beside her in church. She loved to hear Sheila's voice sing the hymns.
Friday night, Sheila sang one more time for Joy, her 6-year-old daughter, Jodi, and the little girl's grandfather, Eddie Bedford.
They also mourned Joy's unborn child
“We all come together when there's times like this, not understanding why a 6-year-old and her mother who is carrying a baby and her father die,” said Tonya Paris, fire victim's friend. "Even at this time of year, it's hard to fathom."
During the service, mourners were told to “grieve for them, but remember them too because they were part of us. But most of all right now, pray for Johnny.”
Johnny is Joy's husband. He was not home when the fire started.
He gave police a routine statement after being notified about the fire, but after hours of trying and looking, his church family still cannot reach him.
“For him to be out there and not know what he's going through and not know if he's OK … It's tough,” said Sheila Johnston.
Desperate, they held this vigil.
“He's not alone, and he still has a family,” Johnston said. “He just doesn't know it yet. But I know he's feeling our prayers.”
