Young swimmer drowns at Joe Pool Lake

CEDAR HILL — A seven-year-old boy getting ready to celebrate his eighth birthday died while swimming at Joe Pool Lake on Saturday.

The child, identified as Ivan Salinas of Mesquite, was with his mother at Cedar Hill State Park when she said he swam ahead of her and she lost sight of him.

A witness pulled the boy from the water after he had been under for an estimated five minutes.

Bystanders began CPR before emergency personnel arrived from Cedar Hill, Grand Prairie and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Ivan was taken to Charlton Methodist Medical Center in Dallas where he was pronounced dead.

He had not been wearing a life jacket, officials said.

This was the second drowning at Joe Pool Lake this y ear, Grand Prairie police said.
