HURST - Some band members from L.D. Bell High School are bringing unexpected joy to a whole new audience.
Clients of the Meals on Wheels are aging neighbors who are grateful to receive nourishment for their body and soul.
Friday, a minivan stopped at the Hurst home of 98-year-old Mrs. Taylor. While she was expecting the food delivery, she was expecting her own personal concert. Playing "America the Beautiful," three members of the L.D. Bell High School band made it one the most memorable meals she had in very long time.
While they have been practicing in 100-degree heat and caving air conditioning and sleep, they found a greater reward playing for an audience of one.
"Beautiful," Mrs. Taylor said of the students' playing. "Beautiful, makes shivers go up and down my spine."
It began as a spontaneous idea. Dorothy Romero was picking the children up from band camp, but also needed to deliver her meals.
"They very graciously, and joyfully, got out of the car at every single house," she said.
"It brings back good memories," Mrs. Taylor said of the live music. "Makes you want to keep living so you can hear more."
They're some of the youngest members of one of the best high school marching bands anywhere. In fact, three years ago, Bell won the Bands of America Grand National Championship. But, the tiniest gesture can be grand, too.
"You saw all of them tear up, and I teared up too in the process," said Cecilia Hernandez, a flute player.
They finished their set for Mrs. Taylor with their fight song. At 98, Mrs. Taylor knows all about the importance of spirit.
"More, more," she cheered.
