CANTON — Store owners Monday got their first look at how bad the damage was from Saturday morning's fire at The Mountain at Old Mill Marketplace.

About 10 percent of the Old West shopping district in a wooded area burned to the ground. Electrical crews spent Monday trying to return power to businesses that survived.

“I want to go inside and see how bad it is and start making a decision,” said store owner Madie Vilbig King.

Stephen Cash, the general manger of the property, thanks a quick response from firefighters for saving so many historic properties. Clean up has been postponed as they wait for insurance agents to assess the damage.

“I was there when every bit of this was built, so it brings back a lot of memories of when it was under construction,” said Cash as he walked through the charred debris.

While many shop owners said they will rebuild, King isn’t sure how she would finance it. She fears many store owners — including herself — had no liability insurance.
