DTV switch: How to recycle TVs in your city

As the switch from analog to DTV nears, some of those who have purchased new television sets may be wondering what to do with their old ones.

News 8 spoke with officials at several North Texas cities regarding recycling televisions.

Arlington residents can drop off TVs and other electronic items at a recycling event that will take place at January 24. They can also be dropped off free of charge at the Arlington Landfill for recycling.

Fort Worth residents can drop off TVs for free at one of three drop-off stations.

Denton residents can pay $15 to recycle TVs at the city's landfill, or make an appointment to have it picked up for $20 curbside.

News 8 is a sponsor of a Free TV drop off that will take place on January 23 and January 24 at the Reunion Arena in Dallas. Those TVs will be recycled.

NORTH TEXAS TV DROP OFF INFORMATION:

Arlington: Arlington residents can take their TVs to the Arlington Landfill free of charge at any time of the year. The landfill has an area set aside to recycle TVs. Arlington residents can also drop off TVs and other electronics on a recycling day on January 24 at UTA. It runs from 9 a.m. to noon.

Plano: Plano offers recycling events twice a month where residents can recycle TVs. The first one takes place on the first Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church at 3160 East Spring Creek Parkway. The second one takes place on the third Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Elliot's Hardware at 2049 Coit Road.

The event is open to anyone, not just Plano residents. However, there is a nominal charge for all electronics. There is a $10 dollar minimum for TVs, prices go depending on size of TV. There is also a $5 dollar minimum for computer monitors. All other electronics are 15 cents a pound.

Dallas: Dallas residents can recycle TVs and computers free of charge on January 23 and January 24 at the Reunion Arena parking lot. If you can't make that event, Dallas residents can drop off TVs at one of these locations:

Northwest Transfer Station: 9500 Harry Hines Boulevard McCommas Bluff Landfill: 5100 Youngblood Road Northeast Transfer Station: 7677 Fair Oaks Avenue Southwest Transfer Station: 4610 S. Westmoreland Road

Fort Worth: Residents can drop off TVs free of charge at one of three drop off stations in Fort Worth:

2400 Brennan Avenue 5150 Martin Luther King Freeway 6260 Old Hemphill Road.

Denton: Denton residents pay a $15 fee to recycle TVs at the landfill on South Mayhill Road.

Or they can pay 20-dollars to have it picked up curbside, but you have to make an appointment.

Frisco: Frisco residents can take their TVs to the Environmental Collection Center, 6726 Walnut Street, free of charge. Drop-off times: Wednesday: 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday: 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. They will not take any TVs more than 36 inches in size.

Mansfield: Mansfield has a recycling event on January 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the City Hall. Residents must have a voucher to participate. Contact the city at 817-276-4240 to receive a voucher.

Grand Prairie: Grand Prairie residents can call the city at 972-237-8000 for a voucher to drop off a TV at a recycling event they are having on January 24. Otherwise, Grand Prairie residents can drop off TVs at the city landfill.

Colleyville: TVs may be placed curbside to be picked up for free by the city's bulk garbage service.

Mesquite: The city of Mesquite is offering a drop off center for anyone to take their outdated televisions. Non-residents can also use the center.

It is located at the Mesquite Convenience Center at 3550 Lawson Road. The cost is $10 per set, and the television screens and cases must be intact. However, the set does not have to work in order to drop it off for recycling.

Desoto: A TV recycling event is scheduled for April.

Irving: Residents can call the city for a voucher for a recycling event. Vouchers for a recycling event that will take place on January 24 are already gone. But, residents can call for a voucher for a second event to be scheduled soon.

Southlake: Residents can place TVs curbside for free as part of city's garbage service.

Coppell: Residents can recycle TVs at event on April 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A nominal fee is charged.

Grapevine: Residents can recycle TVs for free on March 7 at a recycling event that runs 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Dove Park and Parr Park.
