FRISCO - As many North Texans struggle to pay for the basics, birthday party celebrations have been among many events to be scaled down.
However, there is one group that has reached out to help struggling parents give their children lasting memories on their special day. Patricia Morris said she had one mission when she started Birthday Blessing.
"My vision is to have this Birthday Blessing all over the world so that every child's life is celebrated," Morris said.
An all-volunteer, non-profit organization, Birthday Blessing sponsors birthday parties for children in families struggling financially.
"Matthew is turning 11," Morris said at a birthday celebration for three children Sunday at Peter Piper Pizza. "Mason is turning 10 and Jaden is turning two."
The party was complete with decorations, wrapped presents and decorated cakes.
For Trisha Pensky, Matthew's mother, it was a treasured gift to celebrate her son's birthday at a time she feared it may have not been financially possible. "My husband got let go a couple of weeks ago from his job," she said.
Pensky isn't the only mother touched by the program. Rose Williams, who lives in a homeless shelter with her sons Mason and Jaden, also expressed gratitude for the program.
"You really can see how God works for people, moving and inspiring people to different things," said Williams, who recently got a job. "It really is awesome."
For Sunday's party, Morris worked out every detail down to the gifts.
"Matthew, since before Christmas, wanted a PlayStation 2 and this one game for it," Pensky said. "I just mentioned to [Morris] we could find one used at a reasonable price."
Morris was able to do just that.
"PlayStation!" Matthew shouted out while opening the present. "Are you kidding?"
