DALLAS -- After years of planning and fundraising, a $6.8 million homeless housing project will welcome its first tenants on Thursday.
The Cottages at Hickory Crossing are located right across the street from the CitySquare Opportunity Building on Malcolm X Boulevard.
CitySquare and other local non-profits helped raise the money for the community of 50 homes, measuring 400 square feet each. The proximity to the Opportunity Building will give some of Dallas’ chronically homeless people access to food, mental and medical health, and other social services.
The “Housing First” project will save Dallas taxpayers approximately $40,000 in services per each homeless person who will now live at the cottages.
The first move-ins are expected to happen at noon on Thursday as the mayor, council members and other dignitaries take part in the grand opening.
