DALLAS -- Three toddlers looking for their mother were found wandering the streets on Wednesday.

A driver nearly ran over the children who were in the middle of the 4200 block of Jamaica Street.

Dwayne Adkins first saw them.

"All of them were in diapers and they were wet,” Adkins said. “They came outside looking for their momma."

Police said the kids are one-year-old twins and a two-year-old little girl.

"When I walked up, she said, 'Where my momma at?'" Adkins said.

Police believe the children were left alone for hours. Their mother was nowhere to be found on Wednesday.

Thursday morning News 8 showed up at the children’s home and knocked on the door. To our surprise, the mother answered opened the door.

“How come you left them by themselves?” said WFAA’s Rebecca Lopez. “They said they nearly got run over."

The mother answered, "No, no, nothing happened."

Police had searched for her all day Wednesday, and told neighbors to call if they saw her. Neighbors called 911 when they saw she opened the door for us.

Dallas police showed up but she refused to come out. Police did not have a warrant for her arrest, so they could not go in to get her.

Neighbors like Darnisha Andrea, who has children of her own, were angry.

"For her to call herself a mother, that's sad," Andrea said.

The children were taken by Dallas police and now are safe. Their mother faces charges of child abandonment.

For now the children are with family members, while Child Protective Services and Dallas police determine what happens next.
