McALLEN, Texas (AP) — An audit has revealed that a South Texas sheriff's office cannot account for dozens of department-issued weapons that have gone missing.

Hidalgo County Auditor Ray Eufracio tells The Monitor newspaper (http://bit.ly/1uftFBt ) his office attempted to match inventory records against weapons owned by the sheriff's office. Discrepancies reveal 60 weapons have disappeared.

Auditors don't know if the weapons simply were never delivered or if they were stolen or missing without sheriff's officials filing the proper paperwork to update inventory records.

An audit of sheriff's weapons and other equipment hadn't been done since at least 2005.

Eufracio says it's possible his office may never be able to determine what became of the weapons.
