HOUSTON (AP) — A Houston man on Texas death row for nearly 20 years has lost a federal appeal, moving him a step closer to execution.
The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Friday rejected an appeal from 43-year-old Willie Trottie. He was convicted of the May 1993 fatal shootings of his former girlfriend, 24-year-old Barbara Canada, and her 29-year-old brother, Titus, at the Canada family home in Houston. Canada's mother and sister also were wounded in the attack. Evidence showed Canada and Trottie had broken up about nine months earlier.
In his appeal, lawyers for Trottie unsuccessfully argued his trial attorneys were deficient and Harris County prosecutors improperly withheld evidence.
Trottie does not yet have an execution date.
