SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Dozens of couples are at the historic 1892 courthouse in downtown San Antonio to partake in what's become an annual Valentine's tradition — a free marriage on the courthouse steps.
For 24 years now, San Antonio pastor Rev. Joe Sullivan has presided over nuptials at the Bexar County Courthouse.
Sixty-five couples married at midnight. About three dozen more took their vows at mid-morning Thursday and more were arriving for group ceremonies set throughout the day.
Susie Herrera cried as she and her new husband, Louis, stood on the top step among other couples. She acknowledged the ceremony was different, came after only two weeks of planning but she was happy.
The couples vary in age from young to old. Some women wore wedding dresses. Others were more casually dressed.
