GARLAND –– Two signs read 'Prayers for Jaylyn' at the road where the 12-year-old was hit by a driver on Wednesday evening. Jaylyn Jackson is currently listed in critical condition at Children's Hospital.

Garland police say the accident happened around 5p.m. at Country Club Lane and Meridian in Garland. Several witnesses say the 12-year-old was crossing the street to play a game of pickup basketball.

Neighbors who knew Jaylyn and his grandmother were stunned by the news.

"It's very heartbreaking to see what is going," said next door neighbor Monica Arris.

The driver has not been charged with a crime. Police say the driver was not speeding or on the phone. News 8 has learned that the driver was a principal at a school in Garland ISD in 2012.

Department spokesman Joe Harn says it is still early in the investigation but it is likely Jaylyn did not yield to traffic.

"We know there was traffic but nobody stopped and no witnesses stopped that actually saw it," Harn said.

In the meantime, the neighborhoods were empty on Thursday, a much different scene from Wednesday when the accident happened. After talking with several parents they have warned their kids to not go out in light of what happened to 12-year-old Jaylyn.

"I'm checking on my grandkids now and I just got through talking with them," said Diana Preston.

If you have any information on what happened or witnessed the accident you are encouraged to call Garland police investigators at 972-487-7357.
