News 8 has been investigating concerns about benzene levels in the Barnett Shale.

Now the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has issued a directive to its Dallas-Fort Worth regional office ordering staff to investigate any complaints within 12 hours.

If a hazard or unsafe condition is found, TCEQ representatives must contact the drilling company to request immediate action.

Residents have expressed concern about pollution as a byproduct of gas drilling. Benzene is highly flammable and long-term exposure to high levels of benzene is known to cause leukemia.
