NEWS 8 INVESTIGATES

DALLAS — Not long ago, the Fellowship Church in Grapevine was one of the largest and fastest-growing churches in the nation.

Its pastor, Ed Young, was making national headlines by encouraging married couples to have more sex.

But since that time, sources say membership has waned and some say Pastor Young may have lost his way — putting himself and secrecy over God.

He's splashy and hip; his message contemporary and cool. His marketing is  tops in the world of mega-evangelism, making huge waves with his sermon in 2008 titled "Seven Days of Sex."

But in the past few months, it's not theology but physics that may be impacting Young. Namely: What goes up must come down.

One former staff member who says he was close to Young but wishes not to be identified, described it this way: "The lack of accountability. The lavish lifestyle that keeps increasing, while the attendance keeps decreasing."

Over the past few weeks, News 8 has been in contact with a number of individuals who were once close to Young at his massive Fellowship Church in Grapevine, disturbed by his direction and treatment of staff.

Young recently replaced his chief financial officer and replaced him with his personal attorney, business partner and fishing buddy, Dennis Brewer Jr.

With Brewer's help and a complex series of business creations and transactions, Young is now jetting around the country in a French-made Falcon 50 private jet; estimated value, $8.4 million.

Records obtained by News 8 indicate Fellowship Church became the operator of the jet in March of 2007. News 8 discovered the jet parked in a hangar at Alliance Airport north of Fort Worth, tucked away where only a select few can see it.

Those who hear him preach every Sunday have never been told about the aircraft.

"The staff members are told that there is no plane, and several staff members who have actually been on the plane have denied that there is a plane," said the former employee source.

Young, who declined an on-camera interview, told News 8 through a spokesman he "travels globally offering messages of inspiration and transformation to his peers and other pastors."

He makes no mention of traveling in a personal jet.

But FAA records show that as soon as Young took possession of the jet in 2007, the aircraft logged a week-long trip to the Bahamas.

One month later, Young's jet logged a six-day trip to Chetumal, Mexico, also known as the gateway to Belize.

But it's not just the jet and the international travel the Young keeps out of sight.

News 8 has also learned that Young's 10,000 square foot, $1.5 million estate on Lake Grapevine is not listed on the tax rolls in his name, but rather in the name of "Palometa Revocable Trust."

Records show that Young was paid $240,000 a year as a parsonage allowance; that's in addition what sources say is a $1 million yearly pastor's salary.

Young declined to discuss his salary and compensation with News 8, but his spokesman said the pastor's pay "is governed without his participation by an Independent Compensation Committee, relying on outside consultation with knowledgeable and experienced church leaders."

News 8 has also learned that in 2007, Young sold the intellectual property of Fellowship Church's marketing Web site, CreativePastors. He also sold the church's membership mailing list to a newly-formed, for-profit company called EY Publishing.

Today, CreativePastors.com is used by the Youngs to sell his sermons and books for profit.

"When did the intellectual property, when did the preaching and the Bible notes and the books become intellectual property for the pastor?" asked Ole Anthony of the Trinity Foundation in Dallas.  "That's the property of the church."

Anthony says he and his Trinity Foundation investigative team have been monitoring Ed Young for the past three years. He believes Young has fallen into the same trap as many other televangelists he has investigated over the years.

"But now he's just bought in to greed in the name of God," Anthony said.  "They are sanctifying greed, and that's what's so evil."

In the past few years, Young and his attorney, Dennis Brewer Jr., have created a number of for-profit companies generating money apart from Fellowship Church, including: Creative Pastors, CreativePastors.com, Creality Enterprises, Creality Publishing, EY Publishing, Ed Young Resources and UOI Resources.

All the businesses list the fifth floor of Dennis Brewer's law office in Las Colinas as their office address.

But the resources used to generate the profits come, in part, from the not-for-profit Fellowship Church.  For example, Ed's favorite sermons that were delivered at the church.

SMU law professor Wayne Shaw is a former IRS agent who specializes in tax law. He says it's not unusual for pastors to accrue wealth from church resources, but it must be disclosed and separate from any for-profit business.

"They've been given a very special duty, and they get benefits for getting that special duty, such as tax exemptions, charitable contribution deductions," Shaw said.   "I think it's owed to the public that there is transparency that the public sees that there is not something bad going on."

According to Young's spokesman, Larry Ross, "any transactions between the senior pastor and the church are conducted at arms-length with full disclosure to and approval by the board."

No one is accusing Young of breaking any laws, but perhaps he is violating the covenant of honesty with his congregation.

When we asked Young specifically if he has a personal jet, his spokesman told us only that he travels using commercial, charter and leased aircraft, and that he reimburses the church for any personal trips.

Young's spokesman also told News 8 his board approves all spending decisions, and their financial books are audited by an outside accounting firm.

This jet cost in excess of $7000 per hour of flight time, not to mention the costs of ground time at the location. Could buy an awful lot of commercial air flights for this kind of money. I wonder what hotels this pastor and the flight crew he takes with him stay at. Not Motel 6's.

So happy to see that the link to the pastor's blog is here----I came across it and was going to leave it as a comment, but found that you have it here already! Makes me feel a bit better about journalistic integrity!

An article I read recently comes to mind; the author wrote "I will say the prosperity message is of God the day the congregation becomes as rich as the rock star pastor. This will never happen. Prosperity pastors have told their congregations that they will be cursed of God (by misrepresenting Malachi) if they don't give tithes and offerings. What a wonderful way to keep the money flowing." I don't necessarily believe the problem lies in how much the pastor makes. It lies in how he's spending the money. Lazarus was a rich man who walked past the beggar at his gate, ignoring the man's needs. How often do these prosperity preachers ignore the needs of their congregation, and the overwhelming needs all over the globe, to enhance their own lifestyles? I guess we're all guilty of doing that, but aren't preachers supposed to be the example? In other words, if Mr. Young were to make $2 million dollars a year, would we be complaining if he spent 2/3 of that feeding the poor? I don't think so.

1) This is simply an example of sloppy and salacious journalism. "Sloppy" because as a non-profit organization, at least some financial records, board member information, and by-laws fall under Public Disclosure requirements of the IRS. Surely WFAA could have verified a former employee's claims through due diligence of fact-checking public information. 2) Who cares if the church owns a jet? They have campuses here and in Miami, so which is better, owning a jet, or paying for airfare every time somebody has to go? (I'm just saying they might actually a fiscally responsible reason for it). 3) "Intellectual property." When authors are also Pastors (or youth ministers or missions coordinators, etc) who work & are paid by a church, the issue of intellectual property will always be an issue. Wisdom dictates establishing well-written contracts which delineate who owns the rights to publish what is created. Where that line is drawn is between each Pastor and their congregation.

And comments like those above me is EXACTLY why most of the church is lukewarm, asleep, and soon to be spewed out of the Lord's mouth! So no matter how much reporting is done that uncovers questionable behavior by "pastors", people will keep the blinders on and remain mute. Oy vay.

I think that it is sad that News 8 has nothing better to report on than a Pastor who they think spends too much money. No law broken and please don't tell me it is the moral responsibility of News 8 to advise the congregation. Reporters are and having always been perpetrators of turmoil not seeking truth but more drama. During all of the "investigation" how many Sundays did you sit in the church and listen to Ed explain and teach the word of God? Personally I don't care what we pay him or how many vacations he takes or how big his house is. God has blessed him for the good works that he does. All I care about is that I walk away from an Ed Young message with better understanding of my life and what the bible is teaching. He puts things into an understandable way for the world we live in today. He does his job for the congregation and God and at the end of the day that is all that matters. Report all you want, we will not be shaken.

Gosh, I think people have become dumb to "thinking" about things prior to posting comments. Maybe it's from too much TV! Anyway, there is a huge difference between a professional athlete making millions and a pastor of a church making the same money. For one thing, the market pays these athletes, people purchase tickets, these guys get endorsement contracts, etc. At Fellowship, each week the pastor gets up and tells people it's biblical to give 10%, that it's all God's money, not ours. As someone who has given several hundred dollars to FC, I'm simply digusted to find out the church pays the pastor over $1 Million per year plus a parsonage allowance of $250K. The money going into FC comes from tithes given by the congregation for communicating the word of God and changing peoples lives. To find out any part of that money goes to a pastor so he can live like a "Rock Star" is simply beyond disgusting. Think people, Think!

It's amazing that anybody would defend this man, let alone say he is innocent and that "nowhere in the Bible does it say that God wants His servants to be poor." "You cannot serve 2 masters, God and money. You will love one and despise the other." Ring a bell? This man has fallen into the trap of the love of money. Living in a million dollar house and getting a million dollar salary is disgusting. "Do not store up treasure on earth, where moth and rust decay and where thieves break in and steal. Store up your treasure in heaven...for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Jesus said it was easier for a camel to go through the eye of the needle, than a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. Sound familiar? As for Ed using a million dollar plane to preach the Gospel...........nonsense! He's taking luxury vacations in it. Why is Ed Young so special that he can't book a flight on United? Give me a break.

Hey execution time...The person who posted that remark is a devoted Christ follower that spends a huge portion of her life serving in the local church. How much value do you put on a saved soul? If Ed is using those a million dollar plane to go out into the world and preach the gospel, then so be it. Ed has devoted most of his life to furthering the Kingdom of Christ. God has blessed Ed with many talents. It's his God given spiritual gifts (talents) that have helped grow not just Fellowship Church, but has impacted many now Christ followers around the world. You can't put a dollar value on that. As a Pastor at a church the size of FC, no one has more accountability to FC and God than Ed Young Jr. It is my hope that rather than looking for a man’s response to an article that leaves nothing but questions, instead people listen to the answers that God channels through him in the pulpit.

God is faithful, and He is also forgiving. He gives His people a gracious invitation: "‘Return to me, and I will return to you,’ says the Lord Almighty. 10Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the Lord Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. 12"Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land," says the Lord Almighty. God spells it right out - Ed Young and Fellowship church prove it,.... and what is so wrong about being successfull anyway ?

Jibberish.................its successful scamming. Who writes this crapp Leaders of successful “for-profit” and “not-for-profit” organizations maintain entelechy by continually positioning their mission, vision, values and goals throughout the organization. These leaders are then compensated based on the risk-reward relationship of doing so. The measurement of this relationship proves difficult because reward is a quantitative variable and risk is qualitative. Therefore, attitudes shaped by this article take in subtle breaths of ignorance.

How fast everyone turns when a news channel runs a story...journalists are known for exxagerating the facts and in some cases, outright lying. I would also like to point out that Ed encourages us constantly not to judge people, he without sin should cast the first stone. You must also realize that Ed is only HUMAN. We are all human and we all have sin within us. Maybe yours is something that cannot be seen on national television. However, Sin is Sin.

I don't think thestatus of the Intellectual Property is as clear as Ole Anthony makes it out to be. If Ed Young Jr is self-employed, unless there is a written IP agreement with the church, there is a pretty good chance he controls the copyrights on his sermons and writings and shares with the church control of the copyrights on his sound recordings and audio-visual stuff. Ole Anthony is on more solid ground with his assumptions if EYJr is an employee of the church, though. Either way, it is poor form if a pastor transfers ownership of sermons and recordings without consent of the church. Not illegal, just poor form. I bet someone at the church approved those 2007 transfers.

my problem with all this is they aren't accusing him of doing anything wrong or breaking any laws!1 I am a 10 year member of Fellowship. Ed did not take a vow of poverty when he became a pastor and no where is in the Bible that God wants his servants to be poor! Ed has done a lot in his service to God and if God has blessed him with wealth then who ar e we to question that??? Abraham and Solomon were both major figures in the Bible who were VERY, wealthy. You do not have to be poor to be a good servant of God. As for disclosure to the congregation, it is none of our business how big his house is or what he flies around the country as long as he isn't stealing from the church. It amazes how athletes and actors make millions and no one questions it but a pastor does well and suddenly he is crocked and dishonest! That is what is wrong with this world our values are all out of whack!! Pastors work as hard if not harded than actors and pro athletes. God bless you Ed, you have my support!
