DALLAS — Dallas District Attorney Craig Watkins is firing back at Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott.
On Wednesday, a News 8 report detailed how Watkins has twice rejected offers by Abbott's office to help him investigate allegations of corruption by Precinct 5 Constable Jaime Cortes.
Cortes denies all of the allegations, including one that he accepted kickbacks.
Dallas County Commissioners have accused Watkins of ignoring the allegations for political reasons.
Watkins issued a statement Thursday saying he is following the law.
"The mere fact that the offers were not only made in writing, but then provided to the media, gives our office reason to question the AG's motives," Watkins' statement said.
The district attorney said in keeping with his policies, he will not confirm or deny any ongoing investigations.
