UNIVERSITY PARK - The West Nile virus claimed one more life in Dallas County, bringing the total to 11 deaths.
The death reported in the county is the third for ZIP code 75225 in University Park.
Families living in that ZIP code are taking prevention into their own hands.
Kelly Jirovec, a mother of three children, sprayed her kids with bug spray before they went out to play.
"We sprayed everybody down," Jirovec said. "We have bottles [of insect repellent] in the front door, the back door, in the car. We are not leaving the house without spray."
For Dallas County officials, the message is to protect yourself, your family and neighbors.
"To me every new case, every death, illustrates two things," said Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins. "This is a serious health emergency and you need to exhibit personal responsibility. You need to drain water. You need to wear DEET. You need to wear long sleeves."
It's advice Jirovec is putting into action.
"We've walked around the yard," Jirovec said. "We are trying to make sure we got rid of the standing water and we check it every day,. We change the dog's water every day. So we are trying to do what we can to keep everybody safe."
University Park officials are still waiting for mosquito traps and test results from the aerial spraying missions, but they are planning to do hand and possibly truck fogging later this week.
