DALLAS - At Parkland Hospital's emergency room between 500 and 700 patients come through every day. When you're dealing with those kinds of numbers, time is always a factor.
"It's a very busy facility," said Lisa Granado, with Parkland Hospital.
In April of this year Toyota and its production team collaborated with Parkland Hospital to find efficiencies in its processes and streamline operations.
"They're two totally different things; you're talking about machines and production versus people," said Granado, who admits to being skeptical at first.
The change was a technology that already existed in the room. The color display also called Responder 5 details step-by-step where staff is in the discharge process. The colors on the display in the rooms also correspond to the lights shown outside the room.
"It's a visual communication tool so I had don't have to be at the computer at all times," Granado said.
Discharge is identified as the time between the doctor writing the discharge order and the time the patient is leaving the hospital. Before Toyota collaborated with the hospital, discharge took an average of 52 minutes. Now the average is closer to 31 minutes in the two months the staff has been implementing the changes.
"By being more efficient with their care...it is going to help us see more patients," she said.
Staff at Parkland Hospital tells WFAA that the goal is to get discharge time down to 15 minutes. Granado tells us they understand that is a lofty but attainable goal.
