DALLAS — Fighting the swine flu isn't over, yet nearly half the parents who got their kids the first round of H1N1 flu shots didn't return for the second.
Dallas County health officials say that's not good enough, so they issued an important reminder on Tuesday: Children under 10 years of age are supposed to get two rounds of the H1N1 vaccine.
"The only problem is we're not getting that same demand for the second dose," said Zachary Thompson, director of Dallas County Health and Human Services.
You may remember the long lines late last year as parents lined up to get their children inoculated.
Now, however, the health department is retuning 6,500 expired shots to the state, with more on the way.
"People may think we're out of the woods, but we're saying they are still in the height of flu season," Thompson said.
For Sadey Rae's family, coming back within a month is on their list of things to do. "We feel we will be healthier and happier after getting the shots," she said.
The H1N1 vaccine will be available until May in most locations.
And, in case you were wondering, those unused shots will not cost taxpayers a dime.
