The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new flu vaccine specifically for people 65 and over. It's called Fluzone High Dose..

The medication is designed to protect seniors from both seasonal and type-A strains of the virus.

According to the FDA, Fluzone High Dose received the agency's blessing through an accelerated approval pathway, which helps safe and effective medical products for serious or life-threatening diseases become available more quickly.

In clinical studies, Fluzone HighDose demonstrated an enhanced immune responsecompared with Fluzone in individuals 65 and older.

The FDA says as part of the accelerated approval process, the manufacturer is required to conduct further studies to verify that the Fluzone High Dose will decrease seasonal influenza disease after vaccination.
