DALLAS — Methodist Health System announced a $135 million expansion Tuesday.

Of that sum, $108 million will be spent on a new six-story critical care center at Methodist Dallas Medical Center in North Oak Cliff.

The trauma and critical care center will triple the size of the emergency department, add six trauma suites, eight surgical suites and a 36-bed critical care unit.

"It will allow us to expand our current emergency department from 34 rooms to 58 rooms, and it will allow us to expand into the future to 11 stories," said Methodist Dallas president Laura Irvine.

The expansion should be complete in the summer of 2014.

Another part of the facility expansion plan includes an $8.5 million renovation at Methodist Charlton Medical Center in southwest Dallas County. The investment will add 36 new patient care beds and a specialty care unit.
