As we hit the summer stretch, efforts to keep the insects that spread West Nile virus at bay are gearing up in North Texas.

Dallas and Duncanville are offering mosquito "dunks" — donut-shaped cakes of larvicide that kill mosquito larvae, not adult mosquitoes. The dunks usually last for about 30 days.

So far, Dallas County has not reported a human case of West Nile. Dallas will hand out packages at the Code Compliance office (3112 Canton Avenue, Suite 100) on Saturday, July 27. The product will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis starting at 9 a.m.

Duncanville is offering the dunks free for residents now at its Public Works Code Enforcement office at City Hall, 203 East Wheatland Road, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
