HOUSTON -- It has all the elements of a typical beauty pageant. Girls and boys of all ages take the stage. There are crowns, sashes, and trophies, but this pageant is a little different.

“Your outer beauty never lasts,” said director Stacey Boring. “But your inner beauty is always there forever. So that’s where the name ‘Forever Beautiful’ came from.”

Boring started the pageant four years ago when she began entering her then one-year-old daughter in pageants.

“All the pageants around were so structured and they were looking for a certain type of child that fit a certain mold,” Boring said.

She said she was looking for a pageant where kids could be kids.

So she started a “natural” pageant, where contestants wear age-appropriate makeup, simple hairstyles and outfits.

“Blush, lip gloss – they can’t have eyeliner,” Boring said. “Something very simple and basic.”

As a reference point, the other side of the pageant spectrum is glitz.

Glitz pageants are the subject of the popular TLC show “Toddlers and Tiaras.”

Boring said she is not the first to produce a “natural” pageant, but it’s not as mainstream as the “glitz” events.

“In the glitz pageants, if you don’t go on stage when they call you, you’re done.”

It’s why Anna Villalobos entered her 4-year-old daughter Jayden.

“As long as she has fun the outcome doesn’t matter,” Villalobos said.

Michayla Weisse, this year’s “Queen of Queens,” weighed in on how young girls could benefit from these types of pageants.

“Pageants really help you with that, they build your confidence and they build your self-esteem,” Weisse said.

Little Jayden gave the judges her biggest smile and her showed off her pink dress.

It was stiff competition, as pint-sized cuties took the stage to strut their stuff -- their mom’s helping them stay sassy.

A few hours later, the girls lined up for their big moment.

Jayden was named the third runner-up and won a crown and sash.

The next preliminary pageant will be held on October 6 in The Woodlands.
