DALLAS — Vicious dogs attacked an elderly man in southeast Dallas on Tuesday. Leslie Wilson's neighbor fought off the canine assailants.

On Wednesday afternoon, Leslie Wilson and Emilio Contreras saw each other for the first time since the incident.

"I owe my life to you, and I want you to know that," Wilson said to Contreras. "I hear people talk about 'angels.' He's my angel, because if that man hadn't been in there, I was hidden between the gate and the fence, them dogs would have killed me."

Wilson was mowing in his alley around 5:30 Tuesday afternoon when two pit bulls from a neighbor's yard got out and started mauling him.

"I was thinking I was gone," Wilson said.

Contreras, who was cooking out in his backyard, heard Wilson's screams.

"He was screaming a lot to help him, help him, and that's when I jumped the fence to help him," Contreras said.

The two elderly men had trouble fighting off the dogs. "They were grabbing him by his clothes and dragging him, and he was bleeding," Contreras said.

Contreras used a brick to beat the dogs off his neighbor. He was bitten on the hand.

Wilson didn't have life-threatening injuries. but ended up with deep wounds on his arms, legs and head.

"He bit part of my ear right there — eight stitches," Wilson said.

The dogs were taken to the pound while the city investigates the attack.

Leslie Wilson said he's lucky that his guardian angel lived right next door.
