MESQUITE - Veterinarians are checking out dozens of cats pulled from a Mesquite house after animal control officers moved in to shut down an apparent animal rescue group.
Authorities said neighbors complained about the smell coming from the two-bedroom house located on Rusk Drive. Eighty-six cats were seized from Keli Halteman's home. Animal services said some of the animals were ill and that the home had no air conditioning.
An unauthorized rescue shelter known as Halteman's Haven was being run from the home, officials said.
Authorities said Halteman signed a contract releasing the animals to Mesquite Animal Services.
Halteman faces code violations for failing to have an active commercial kennel permit. Mesquite zoning rules limit homeowners to a maximum of three cats.
Mesquite Animal Services is working to place the 86 cats, but said the ones with medical issues or those seriously ill may be euthanized.
