GARRETT — A two-year-old dog named "Bear" escaped from its home in Ellis County. When it wandered back, there were signs the Shih Tzu had been tortured.
One of the dog's eyes was ripped out, while the other eye was so badly damaged it had to be removed at the nearby Ennis Vet Clinic.
"We started looking for puncture wounds; there were no puncture wounds, which is what is consistent with an animal attack," said Dr. Courtney Blair. "We're starting to get a bit suspicious that it may have been a malicious act."
Linda Zmolik is the dog's owner.
"I know it wasn't an animal," she said, fighting back tears.
The elderly woman faces health problems of her own, and says says she can't care for a blind dog. The clinic is looking to adopt out the animal.

Local authorities, including Garrett police, have been looking into the incident. The investigation continues.
