GRANBURY - Officials in Hood County issued a code red alert Thursday after a swarm of bees attacked a dog and several people.

The attack happened around 5:30 p.m. in the 3900 block of Hedge Row in the Oak Trail Shores subdivision of Granbury. A dog was killed; neighbors who tried helping were stung several times.

"I wrapped a blanket around my head and they were flying into my nose," said neighbor Doyle Bailey, who lives just two doors down from where the incident happened.

Bailey said he tried desperately to save the German shepherd that was attached to a chain.

"I felt sorry for the dog," he said.

Bailey himself was stung about two dozen times. A beekeeper was called to the area and removed several hives from behind the home.

It is unclear what made the bees go on the attack. Officials instructed the homeowner to call an exterminator to get rid of the remaining bees.
