FORT WORTH — The Fort Worth Animal Care and Control division hasn't euthanized a healthy adoptable animal in two weeks.
Staffers say it's first time in more than a decade this has happened.
Since opening up a new adoption center at the Hulen PetSmart store last month, adoptions have skyrocketed.
More than 100 cats and dogs were placed with families in 12 days at the store. At the shelter, that type of volume would have taken a month.
Fort Worth Animal Control teamed up with PetSmart, which gave the city free space at the store along with a chance to reach out to new families.
The partnership saves the city money for food and medical costs, and it's saving the lives of animals.
"We haven't had to euthanize a healthy adoptable pet because of space, which is huge," said shelter manager Keane Menefee. "It's not something this facility has been able to do."
The new adoption center has been so busy, shelter officials actually ran out of adoptable pets earlier this week and had to reach out to nearby agencies to bring more in.
The Hulen PetSmart is located at 4800 SW Loop 820, on the service road west of South Hulen Street. Adoptions are available Monday-Saturday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Call the Fort Worth Animal Shelter at 817-392-7297 for more information.
