"The Princess Kaiulani" is an earnest, heavy-handed new film, based on a fascinating true story that took place in the late 1800s, and the brave Hawaiian princess who fought a remarkable political battle for her land and people.
Unfortunately, the story of Hawaii's annexation is clouded over by a sappy romance.
When the film is political, it's good, but it suffers from over-direction and over-writing.
"The Princess Kaiulani" died from an illness at the young age of 23. Her life and legacy deserves a much better film.
